Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, on September 2, 1966. Her father was a wealthy oil executive, and her mother was a socialite. Hayek attended Catholic school in Mexico City, and later studied international relations at the University of the Americas in Mexico City.
