Naval Career

Governor of New France

In 1747, La Galissoniere was appointed governor of New France, a vast and strategically important colony in North America. La Galissoniere expanded the colony's fortifications, constructed new roads and canals, and encouraged agriculture and trade. He also established the first public library in New France and implemented reforms to improve the administration of justice.

Return to France

After six years as governor, La Galissoniere returned to France in 1753. He was appointed secretary of state for the navy, a position that gave him oversight of all naval matters. During his tenure, he implemented a series of reforms that modernized the French Navy and prepared it for future conflicts.

Roland Michel Barrin De La Galissoniere died in 1756 at the age of 63. His legacy extends far beyond his lifetime, shaping the course of history in both France and North America.
