Early Life and Career

Clare Boothe was born in New York City in 1903. Her father was a wealthy lawyer, and her mother was a socialite. Boothe attended Vassar College, where she studied journalism and drama. After graduating, she worked as a journalist for several years before turning to playwriting.

Boothe's first play, The Women, was a huge success. It opened on Broadway in 1936 and ran for over a year. The play was a satire of the lives of wealthy women in New York City. It was a critical and commercial success and made Boothe one of the most famous playwrights in America.

In 1939, Boothe married Henry Luce, the founder of Time magazine. Luce was a powerful and influential man, and their marriage gave Boothe access to the highest levels of society. She used her position to advocate for conservative causes and to promote American values.

Political Career

In 1942, Boothe was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She was the first woman to represent Connecticut in Congress. Boothe served in the House for two terms, and she quickly became one of the most visible and outspoken members of the Republican Party.

In 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Boothe as ambassador to Italy. She was the first woman to serve as a U.S. ambassador to a major country. Boothe served in Italy for three years, and she played a key role in improving relations between the two countries.

After leaving the diplomatic service, Boothe continued to be active in politics. She was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1964 and 1968. She also served on the boards of several conservative organizations.
