In Paying the Land, Joe Sacco turns his unflinching gaze to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR),a vast and pristine wilderness that has been the site of a decades-long battle between oil companies and environmentalists. Through interviews with local Gwich'in people, scientists, and industry representatives, Sacco exposes the devastating legacy of oil development in the Arctic, from the destruction of caribou habitat to the contamination of drinking water. He also explores the ongoing struggle for justice waged by the Gwich'in people, who have fought tirelessly to protect their ancestral lands and way of life.
Paying the Land is a powerful and timely work of investigative journalism. With its stunning artwork and incisive storytelling, Sacco exposes the human and environmental toll of corporate greed, government negligence, and the ongoing struggle for justice. This must-read book is a powerful indictment of the damage we inflict on the planet and the lives we endanger in our relentless pursuit of profit.
