Josef František was a Czech fighter pilot who flew for the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War Two. He was one of the most successful fighter pilots of the war, with a total of 17 confirmed kills. His memoir, Defying the Odds, is a gripping account of his experiences during the war.

František was born in 1914 in what is now the Czech Republic. He joined the Czechoslovak Air Force in 1936 and flew against the Germans during the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939. After the fall of Czechoslovakia, František escaped to Britain where he joined the RAF.

František flew with the RAF's No. 310 Squadron, which was a Czechoslovak unit. He flew a variety of aircraft during the war, including the Hurricane, Spitfire, and Mustang. He fought in the Battle of Britain, the D-Day landings, and the Battle of the Bulge.

František was a skilled and courageous pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Czechoslovak Military Cross for his bravery. He was also promoted to the rank of squadron leader.

František's memoir is a fascinating account of his experiences during the war. He writes about the challenges of being a fighter pilot, the dangers of combat, and the camaraderie of his fellow pilots. He also provides a unique perspective on the war from the perspective of a Czech pilot flying for Britain.

Defying the Odds is a must-read for anyone interested in World War Two, aviation, or military history. It is a gripping and inspiring account of one man's courage and determination.

Here are some excerpts from the book:

"I joined the RAF because I wanted to fight for freedom. I wanted to help defeat the Nazis and protect my homeland."

"The Battle of Britain was the most intense aerial combat I have ever experienced. The Germans were determined to destroy our air force, and we were determined to stop them."

"I was shot down three times during the war, but I was always able to escape and return to flying."

"The war was a terrible experience, but it also taught me the value of courage, determination, and teamwork."
