Early Life and Career
Lindsey Vonn was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on October 18, 1984. She began skiing at the age of two and quickly showed a talent for the sport. She won her first race at the age of five and went on to win many more races throughout her childhood.
Vonn made her World Cup debut at the age of 16 in 2001. She had a successful rookie season, finishing in the top 10 in several races. The following season, she won her first World Cup race, a downhill in Lake Louise, Canada.
Vonn continued to improve her results in the following years. She won her first World Cup title in the downhill in 2008. She also won the overall World Cup title that year, becoming the first American woman to win the overall title since Tamara McKinney in 1983.
Olympic Success
Vonn's Olympic debut came at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. She was just 17 years old at the time and finished 10th in the downhill.
Four years later, at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Vonn won a bronze medal in the downhill. She also finished fifth in the super-G and eighth in the giant slalom.
Vonn's greatest Olympic success came at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She won the gold medal in the downhill, becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing since Picabo Street in 1998. She also won a bronze medal in the super-G.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Vonn won a bronze medal in the downhill. She also finished sixth in the super-G and eighth in the giant slalom.
