Joining the RSS
In 1942, at the age of 15, Advani joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),a Hindu nationalist organization. The RSS played a major role in the Indian independence movement and continues to be a powerful force in Indian politics. Advani quickly rose through the ranks of the RSS and became a prominent leader. In 1951, he was elected General Secretary of the RSS.
Entering Politics
In 1957, Advani entered politics by contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Bhopal constituency. He won the election and became a member of the Indian Parliament. Advani quickly established himself as a rising star in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),which was founded in 1980. In 1984, he was elected President of the BJP.
Rise to Power
Advani led the BJP to a series of electoral victories in the 1990s. In 1998, the BJP formed a coalition government with several other parties and Advani became Deputy Prime Minister of India. He held this position until 2004, when the BJP lost the general election. Advani remained a key figure in the BJP and served as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.
Later Years
In 2009, Advani retired from active politics. He has since written several books and continues to be a respected elder statesman. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian politics.
