Maya Moore's Basketball Career
Maya Moore was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, in 1989. She began playing basketball at a young age and quickly emerged as one of the top players in the country. She played college basketball at the University of Connecticut, where she led the Huskies to two national championships. After graduating from UConn, Moore was drafted first overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2011 WNBA Draft.
Moore quickly became one of the best players in the WNBA. She was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2011 and has been named to the All-WNBA First Team six times. She has also won four WNBA championships with the Lynx, in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017.
Moore has also been a member of the United States national basketball team since 2010. She has won two Olympic gold medals with the team, in 2012 and 2016.
Maya Moore's Social Justice Work
Off the court, Maya Moore is a vocal advocate for social justice. She has spoken out against police brutality and racial injustice and has worked to raise awareness of the importance of education and mentorship for young women.
In 2019, Moore took a break from basketball to focus on her social justice work. She worked with the Innocence Project to help free Jonathan Irons, a man who had been wrongfully convicted of murder and spent 23 years in prison. Irons was exonerated in 2020, and Moore's work was instrumental in his release.
Moore has also worked with the Vera Institute of Justice to reform the criminal justice system. She has advocated for reducing mass incarceration and increasing access to education and job training for people who have been incarcerated.
