About the Author

Frederick Patterson (1833-1932) was an African-American educator and philanthropist. He was the founding president of Tuskegee University and served in that role for over half a century.

Patterson was born into slavery in Clarksville, Tennessee. He escaped to freedom in 1863 and went on to attend Oberlin College and the Union Theological Seminary.

In 1881, Patterson founded Tuskegee University, which became a leading institution of education for African Americans. Patterson's goal was to provide students with the skills they needed to succeed in life and to instill in them the values of hard work, self-reliance, and community service.

Patterson was a tireless advocate for education and for the rights of African Americans. He was a close friend and advisor to Booker T. Washington, and he played a key role in the development of the Tuskegee Machine, which was a system of industrial education for African Americans.

Patterson's autobiography is a valuable historical document that provides insights into the life of a remarkable man and the challenges and triumphs of the African-American community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
