Deployment to the Pacific

Battle of the Philippines

In October 1944, the 506th Fighter Group played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Philippines. Turner and his fellow pilots flew multiple sorties each day, providing close air support to ground troops and attacking Japanese positions.

In April 1945, the 506th Fighter Group participated in the invasion of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War. Turner's Thunderbolts flew countless missions over the island, providing air cover for the landing forces and attacking Japanese defenses.
